Zaslon Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

W.Iwanowicz: I started Zasłon as a studio project to implement ideas that I could not bring to life in previous (not bm) bands. This form suits me because now I have little time and opportunity to engage in a regular band.Vocalist (thóryvos) also sings in Επιλέξετε θάνατος and in some other bm projects.

2.Recently you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

W.: I wanted it to be fast, short, raw tracks with a certain melody. The foundation of old-school Black metal with a touch of modern influences. Despite the fact that this is a studio project, the tracks were conceived in such a way that they would be good enough for live performance. All guitar parts are recorded on the bass. By the way, they sound quite similar. During recording and mixing i dealt with open minded people, so there were no problems with it.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

W.: The lyrics contains existential themes of life and death. Torments and ideas of martyrdom that haunt a person until his last breath. I was mostly inspired by "The Preachers of Death" and "Voluntary Death" Nitzshe's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". For this reason, I used the passage as a preface.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Zaslon'?

W.: It's a transliteration (заслон) of Russian military term Defensive screen. Also In this spelling "Zasłon" it is a reference to the Polish black metal scene, just like my nickname.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

W.: The cover and logo started it all. They were made by russian artist Molochko even before the music. They pair very well with music and the general message.

6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

W.: Not yet, we are planning to perform after we have some more tracks and time for rehearsals.

7.So far very little is known about the band. are you planning on expanding your presence in the future or do you prefer to keep a lower profile?

W.: We prefer to stay in the shadows. Everything you need you can hear, read and see on the release or live gigs in future.

8.Cureentlythe band is unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

W.: Physical copies are an important part of the scene. As for the next release, it will definitely be published. First we need to record the material, then we can talk specifically about it.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

W.: The release is currently only on the bandcamp. It haven't come out on the streaming services yet. We are only at the beginning of the road.

I haven't done any promotion yet, made a small newsletter on foreign blogs and websites. I like the process itself, each review and feedback is already an achievement.

10.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

W.: I plan to record 3-4 more songs in the near future. It will also be necessary to devote time to promotion. Then we will prepare for a live show. It will be possible to talk about LP later.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

W.: I listen to a lot of different music and styles, sometimes even what I don't like. As for the influence on me it's early Immortal and Emperor. As for thóryvos it's Warloghe, Horna, Sargeist, Belketre.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

W.: There are preachers of death: and the earth is full of those to whom desistance from life must be preached.
