Hellcharge are a band from Portugal that plays a raw mixture of black metal and punk and this is a review of t heir 2021 compilation album "Don't Try" which will be released on December 21st.
Spoken word parts start off the compilation before going into a heavier punk influenced direction while most of the tracks are very long and epic in length. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the music also adding in a great amount of 90's influences and a lot of the songs are recorded live.
All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats can be heard which also gives the tracks more of a raw feeling.
The band also brings in some Minor Threat, The Damned and Nirvana covers along with some tracks also adding in shouting style vocals as well as the music also showing an influence of the 70's and early 80's era of punk rock, when guitar solos and leads are utilized they also remain true to an old school style and as the compilation progresses a brief use of psychedelic soundscapes can also be heard. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover dirty realism, drugs and politically incorrect themes.
In my opinion Hellcharge are a very great sounding raw mixture of black metal and punk and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ode To A Junkie" "Planet Crack" "Horsepower" and "Rehab is For Quitters". 8 out of 10.
