Devouring Famine are a solo project from California that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording plats a very raw and depressive mixture of black and doom metal and this is a review of his self released 2022 demo "Contract From Below".
A very dark y et heavy sound starts off the demo while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. Vocals are mostly grim y et high pitched sounding b lack metal screams along with the slower sections of the songs also adding in elements of dsbm and doom metal and all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the demo more of a raw feeling. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while some tracks also add in a small amount of clean playing along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them, the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and clean playing can also be heard on the closing track which is also an instrumental.
On this recording Devouring Famine adds in elements of dsbm and doom metal into his raw style of black metal to create something very different sounding from his previous releases. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Occultism and Darkness themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Devouring Famine and if you are a fan of r aw and depressive black and doom metal, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Contract From Below" and "Dread presence". 8 out of 10.
