Sol Kia are a duo from Belgium that plays a very experimental and psychedelic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Zos Ethos" which will be released in September by I, Voidhanger Records.
A very heavy and lo-fi sound starts off the album while you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording. Whispers are also utilized at times along with most of the vocals being tortured yet grim black metal screams which also have their melodic moments and the songs also mix in a great amount of psychedelic elements.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Synths are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the tracks while the music also gets very experimental sounding at times and all of the drum beats are programmed.
Touches of industrial can also be heard at times along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length. Dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and when solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very distorted, dark yet melodic style.
Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly along with some shouting style vocals also being added into some parts of the recording. Distorted sounding drones can also be heard in certain sections of the album along with one track also adding in some goth style vocals, Middle Eastern style melodies can also be heard on a couple of songs. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover Occultism, Satanism and the seep distress of living a life without any purpose or hope.
In my opinion Sol Kia are a very great sounding experimental and psychedelic black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this duo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mithraeum" "Nasatanada Zazas!" and "Hoathahe Saittan!". 8 out of 10.
