2.So far you have released on full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?
- I wanted to combine the heavy sound of 70´s prog rock and psychedelia to 90´s (black) metal atmosphere. We wanted to make the whole album as monumental, chaotic and unapproachable wall of noise. It all came out quite naturally we didn´t have to waste a lots of time in searching for the proper setups and soundscapes but the mixing was the hard part since there is more stuff in each of the songs than many bands have in their entire career.
3.The band has been around since 2012 but waited until 2017, to release any music, can you tell us a little bit more about the earlier years?
- There´s not much to tell. Just perfecting the black art and the great work.
4.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects you have explored with your music so far?
- I do always write the lyrics in terms of a song, the bigger picture. The music is written first and then I start to work with the lyrics. I do not choose the subjects forehand although I do have some ideas and subjects of which I would like to write. I write down the things that the music does bring into my mind and what does fit to the overall atmosphere of the song. Then I continue to compose them together, piece by piece. I do work so until the song feels like a whole. In the way the creation process for me is like solving a great buzzle. Or painting a picture. Or carving a statue.
I get the inspiration for the lyrics from various different sources from religious prophecies and the end of the world scenarios to the literature and art of 19th and 20th century. From dystopies to scifi, horror and surrealism.. I like to read, a lot, and the writings of such as Guillaume Apollinaire, T. S. Eliot, Charles Baudelaire, Comte De Lautreamont, Arthur C. Clarke, Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood, Philip K. Dick, Mika Waltari, Edith Södergran, etc. are a huge inspiration for me. I wont go in specifying and analyzing each of the songs because it would take too much time and I want to leave some room to the listener to figure things out themselves.
5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Se Lusiferin Kannel'?
- It did make a great logo. Hah! No, seriously, in the beginning we did have a different name but it turned out that it was on the use so I decided to change it. I wanted the name that is original and has an interface with Finnish culture. I took the name from the title of the book by poet and writer Aarni Kouta. I added the word “Se” (that) to it as an definite article (the), it is something that was in use in one of the first forms of written Finnish language constructed by Mikael Agricola, but it hasn´t been used since. To be exact we do not have any definite or indefinite articles, but still they can be used in a poetic manner. What comes to the name itself it has three different meanings and one of them is associated with the psalm book by Finnish evangelical revivalist movement. The other two I leave for you to find out.
6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?
- Which one? The one made by Heresie Graphics or the one I made? The HG version was the idea of Signal Rex and I liked the art he had made earlier and I wanted to see how someone else perceives our music. I think that he did great job and managed to capture the feeling of the album very well. The one I did is taken from the movie Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl. We do not sympathize any totalitarian regimes but the the picture works well with our music and it also has an allegorical relation to the lyrics in the album, especially to the songs “Ilmestys Myrskystä” and “Auringon Valtakunta”.
7. I have noticed a 3rd eye on the album cover, does Occultism play any role in your music?
- Is it a third eye?? Hmm.. SLKe is not an occult band in definition and we are not a followers of any specific philosophy, political movement or religion but I have always been very fascinated by occultism in general and I do possess quite an extensive library on a subject. I have used some metaphors that derive from occultism and religious scriptures but it is more that I do find them intriguing than believing in something. And they do happen to fit well with this kind of music! I would imagine thou that our album could be used as a background music on a mass. It would make a plaque mass..
8.So far there has been very little information online along with the facebook page also not really saying much, do you prefer to remain mysterious?
- Yes. We are the three lost words. And no. The art is what matters not the persons behind it. We do not fancy fame neither need any attention.
9.Has the band done any live shows yet or is this strictly a studio project?
- We´ve been asked if we would be interested in doing live shows but sadly it is not possible at the moment. But it is not totally out of the question. Never say never.
10.Signal Rex is also re-issuing your 2017 digital album on physical format, can you tell us a little bit more about the newer version?
- SR wanted it to be remastered and I wanted to hear that how it affects to the music. The older version is how I want us to sound like and the newer version is how someone else wants us to sound like.
11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?
- I have been surprised about the interest that our album has gained considering the lack of interest we´ve had to promote the it. It was, and still is, a willful choice hence we feel neither need nor intention to hit the charts and make it big (As if it would even be possible with this kind of music). The main thing is to create art and if someone gets something out of it then it is a bonus.
12.When can we expect another full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
- A close friend of mine asked the same thing in sauna after we got finished the recordings of the album. I answered then that it will be released within a timeline of next 3-7 years. At the moment the first looks like it is a close shove; 89% of the music is done and most of the lyrics are written but there's still a lots of work to be done. We have a loose schedule but we are not working by the clock so we do not declare any dates yet.
13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
- Huuh.. Our musical influences vary a lot. From the 70´s Berlin School ambient and movie soundtracks to the 90´s norwegian black metal. From the folk music, religious hymns and classical to industrial and avant-garde. There was a list of names in the facebook page but I took it off because it was long and exhausting, but to mention some that have had and will have a huge influence to us: Current 93, Devil Doll (the Slovenian one), Emperor, Ulver, Dead Raven Choir, Laibach, My Dying Pride, Ritchie Blackmores Rainbow and Black Sabbath (the Dio era in both), Dødheimsgard, King Diamond, Pensées Nocturnes, Solefald, Tangerine Dream, Meshuggah, Laibach, Halo Manash, King Crimson, Neurosis, Neptune Towers, Comus, Arcturus, Bathory, Paradise Lost, Ved Buens Ende, Urfaust, Paysage d'Hiver, Tartaros.. And the list goes on.
14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
