Penance Stare is a solo project from the United Kingdom that plays a mixture of atmospheric black metal, shoegaze, darkwave, ambient and witchhouse and this is a review of her 2019 album "Solanaceae" which was released by Crow Versus Crow".
Ambient style soundscapes start off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the music while the synths also gives the songs more of an atmospheric feeling. Female vocals are also a very huge part of the recording while clean guitars are also added into some parts of t he music and also add in an influence of darkwave.
Most of the drum beats are programmed while the heavier riffing is mostly rooted in the more modern and atmospheric side of black metal. Elements of goth, witchhouse and shoegaze can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording and after a small amount of aggressive screams can also be heard in the background.
All of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them. A touch of industrial is also added into some parts of the music and when the music speeds up a small amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can also be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling as well as some of the riffing also incorporating more melody as the album progresses. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi.
In my opinion Penance Stare is a very great sounding mixture of atmospheric back metal, shoegaze, darkwave, ambient and wotchhouse and if you are a fan of t hose musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Our Mouths Ablur" "Graveside" "Cradlewell 9LACRIMA)" and "Nux Vomica". 8 out of 10.
