Basmu are a solo project from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that plays a very raw and lo-fi form of occult black metal and this is a review of his 2017 album "Witchblood" which will be re-issued in August by Lunar Apparitions.
Ambient style soundscapes and synths start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the music also brings in a great amount of 90's and early 2000's influences.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the riffs also add in some dark sounding melodies at times. A lot of the music also captures a very lo-fi atmosphere along with some of the ambient elements also making a return on some of the later songs.
The music also has its ritualistic moments and as the album progresses some of the vocals start getting more deeper and demonic sounding as well as a later song also introducing clean playing onto the recording. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover Traditional Witchcraft, Satanism, Vampirism and Occultism themes.
In my opinion Basmu are a very great sounding raw and lo-fi occult black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Witchblood" "The Crooked Wand Of The Ophidian Craft" and "Crytalin Prison Of SOuls". 8 out of 10.
