Chicago, Illinois's Chrome Waves has returned with a new recording which shows the music moving away from a post black metal style and going into more of a mixture of art rock and shoegaze and this is a review of their 2021 album "The Rain Will Cleanse" which will be released in September as a joint effort between Transcending Records and Disorder Recordings.
Night sounds start off the album before adding in some post rock style riffs while the solos and leads are also heavily rooted in the same genre. Clean vocals are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them.
Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the songs also add in a great amount of shoegaze elements. Synths are also added into some parts of the recording along with one track also introducing clean playing onto the album as well as the heavier riffing still showing an influence of post black metal, all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction and on the closing track the vocals go into more of an aggressive direction.
On this recording Chrome Waves moves away from the more aggressive side of post black metal and goes into more of a shoegaze influenced art rock direction as well as still displaying some metal influence in the heavier sections of the songs. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover loss, urban life and depression themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Chrome Wave and while some black metal fans might not like the direction, I can see this recording appealing to fans of post metal, art rock and shoegaze. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "When Night Falls" and "Aspiring Death". 8 out of 10.
