United Kingdom's solo project MRTVI has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of an experimental style of black metal with some elements of noise, grindcore, and death metal and this is a review of his 2021 album "Autology The Shadow Work" which will be released in September by Life As A Dream Records.
Distorted spoken word parts start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction while you can also hear all of the instruments that are present on the recording. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams as well as the music also having its experimental and dissonant moments.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also remain true to more of a dissonant and progressive musical direction. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and grindcore elements can also be heard along with most of the tracks also being very short in length and capturing an improv atmosphere at times.
Touches of technical death metal can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as some noises also being added into some parts of the album, growls are also added on a couple of tracks and the music is also added into 2 different chapters and as the recording progresses a brief use of clean playing can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover spirituality, philosophy and suicide themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from MRTVI and if you are a fan of experimental black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Both Prophecy And Curse" "Sheathed in Flesh" "Will Makes The Whole" and "Arrogant In Sight". 8 out of 10.
