Finland's Goatskullt have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for an old school form of black emtal with some elements of folk, punk, thrash and speed metal and this is a review of their self released 2021 ep "Tevras" which will b e released in September.
A very heavy punk influenced sound starts off the ep while all of the musical instruments also avre a very powerful sound to them. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a r aw feeling and the vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams.
The music also adds in a great amount of 90's era second wave influences while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Elements of thrash and speed metal are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording along with a small amount of melody also being added into some of the guitar riffing.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also remain true to an old school style when they are utilized mixed in with a more modern touch along with one track also adding in some chants as well as the vocals also adding in a more shouting approach and a small amount of clean singing on a later song, synths and touches of folk music. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in the bands native tongue and covers mortality, death and nothingness filtered through dark Finnish Folklore.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Goatskullt and if you are a fan of old school black emtal, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Lihan Uni" and "Mustan Manan Lahde". 8 out of 10.
