Hraesvelgr are a band from Sweden that plays a very aggressive and depressive form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2021 album which was released by NSM Prod.
A very heavy yet melodic sound starts off the album while you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams that also have a very depressive touch to them along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard while operatic voices can also be heard briefly. A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the tremolo picking also giving the music more of a raw feeling when it is utilized.
One of the songs also introduces synths onto the recording along with the music also has its atmospheric moments as well as one track also being an instrumental, some of the riffing also shows an influence of the mid 90's to early 2000's era, as the recording progresses a brief use of clean playing can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Swedish and cover beauty, heaviness, otherworldly and mythology themes.
In my opinion Hraesvelgr are a very great sounding depressive black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Transmagi" and "Seger". 8 out of 10.
