Svartalv are a solo project from Norway that plays a very atmospheric form of ambient black metal and this is a review of his 1997 album "Maresalmer Fra Helvete" which was re-issued in 2021 by Earth And Sky Promotions.
Rain and thunder sounds start off the album while the synths also bring in elements of dark ambient. Touches of dungeon synth can also be heard at times along with the music also having its experimental moments as well as some distorted guitar sounds also being used at times and the vocals are mostly high pitched yet grim sounding black metal screams.
Atmospheric sounds are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording while all of the drum beats are also programmed. Whispered vocals can also be heard in some parts of the album along with a great portion of the songs also being very long and epic in length along with the spoken word parts also giving the music more of a depressive atmosphere.
All of the music also sticks to a slower direction along with most of the tracks also being very long and epic in length. Melodic chants can also be heard briefly and also gives the album more of a ritualistic feeling as well as some noises and power electronics also being utilized at times, the slower riffing also enhances the black metal side of the recording. The production sounds very dark while the lyrics are written in Norwegian and cover darkness and blasphemy themes.
In my opinion Svartalv are a very great sounding atmospheric ambient black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Farsottgang" "Sorte Salmers Natt" and "Vranglære Til Dagers Ende". 8 out of 10.
