Cosmic Burial are a solo project from Germany that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays an instrumental and atmospheric form of ambient black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album"...to the past" which will be released in September by Purity Through Fire.
Ambient style synths start off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. All of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic yet atmospheric style and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
When clean playing is utilized it also adds in some touches of shoegaze and post rock while all of the drum beats are also programmed. All of the music also avoids the use of any vocals or voices along with the music also capturing the heaviness of atmospheric black metal as well as the tremolo picking also giving the album more of a raw feeling when it is finally utilized and all of the music sticks to either a slow or mid tempo direction.
On this recording Cosmic Burial remains true to the atmospheric and ambient style style of black metal from previous releases as well as keeping everything instrumental while the production sounds very dark and raw.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Cosmic Burial and if you are a fan of instrumental, ambient and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Alpha Bootis" and "Alpha Canis Majoris". 8 out of 10.
