This is a review of a split ep between Oregon's Nefaria and Ohio's Zygmythkaupt which was released in 2015 by Dungeon Tapes and we will start off the review with Nefaria a solo project that has been featured before in this zine and plays a very raw and old school form of black metal.
His side of the split starts out with harsh noise sounds and experimental sounds before going into more of a dark, primitive and raw black metal direction along with some grim screams and some of the riffs also bring in a touch of death metal and also mixes in morbid sounding melodies and the song is 15 minutes in length and sticks to either a slow or mid paced musical direction while you can also hear old school black/death metal guitar leads and solo at times, the production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Occultism themes.
In my opinion this is another very great sounding recording from Nefaria that takes his old school black metal and gets more experimental along with a touch of death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out his side of the split.
Next up is Zygmythkaupt who continues the raw, depressive and noisy style of black metal from previous releases while also mixing in more of an old school style.
His side of the split starts out very silently before adding in drones and field recordings and after a few seconds the music goes into more of a raw and ambient black metal direction along with some grim screams and the riffs also bring in a great amount of depressive sounding melodies and the riffs also stick to either a slow or mid paced musical direction and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can be heard, the production sound s very dark, raw and old school, while the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Zygmythkaupt and if you are a fan of the raw, old school and depressive genres of black metal, you should check out his side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "II" and "IV".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and if you are a fan of black metal that is purely harsh and underground, you should check out this release. 8 out of 10.
