Once Upon A Winter are a band from Greece that plays a mixture of blackgaze, gothic doom metal and progressive post rock and this is a review of their 2019 album "Pain And Other Pleasures" which will be released in September by Snow Wave.
Atmospheric soundscapes start off the album along with a great portion of the tracks being very long and epic in length. Spoken word parts can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while keyboards and violins are also used quite a bit throughout the album as well as the songs also adding in a great amount of clean playing.
All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them while the music also gets very progressive at times. Elements of goth, post rock and shoegaze are also a very huge part of the songs along with the slow and heavy riffs being very heavily rooted in doom metal and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic style.
The riffs also utilize a great amount of melody as well as the vocals also bringing grim sounding black metal screams into the music briefly. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and tremolo picking is also added into one of the songs. most of the tracks are instrumentals and as the album progresses a brief use of female vocals can be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Once Upon A Winter are a very great sounding mixture of blackgaze, gothic doom metal and progressive post rock and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Loose End In Time"and "Nepenthe". 8 out of 10.
