Havens are a solo project from Pennsylvania that plays an atmospheric form of post black metal and this is a review of his self released 2019 album "On The Verge of Collapse".
Post rock style guitar leads and spoken word samples start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also brings in a decent mount of blast beats and tremolo picking as well as the solos also being very heavily influenced by the more melodic style of black and death metal.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the vocals bring in more of an aggressive approach to black metal. Most of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with the riffs also utilizing a great amount of melody and clean playing can also be heard in some parts of the music.
At times the music gets very atmospheric sounding while elements of hardcore can also be heard in some parts of the music, synths can also be heard in certain sections of the recording and as the album progresses spoken word samples also make a brief return. The production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover introspective, personal and political themes.
In my opinion Havens are a very decent sounding atmospheric post black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out t his recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Generation Enslaved" and "The Storm Within". 7/5 out of 10.
