Demenzia Mortis Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Demenzia Mortis is a black/death metal band from Belgium founded in 2014 by Asmodeus (bass) and AxHell (drums), then joined by Grabak Hellfire (guitar, ex-Nemesis Irae). Naberus (vocals) joined the band 2015 and the band started developing their music actively under the influence of bands such as Marduk, Belphegor, Dark Funeral, Emperor and many more…

2.So far you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on the recording?
We wanted to produce something dark and heavy. Our new songs are more technical but this EP already gives an idea of what the band wants to bring to black metal fans : something raw, sometimes a little bit melodic, but we would say DM is a good compromise between black and death metal.

3.A lot of your lyrics deal with Satanism, Philosophy and Anti Religion themes. can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?
Religion had and still has an impact on History, culture and, in some parts of the world, economics. We don’t want to debate about how good/bad this influence is or was. Because the real problem is in the roots of religion. Religion was supposed to unite people and in some way it happened, but if you open your eyes you realize religion divided us and was the origin of wars, social conflicts and so on. You can notice that if you read about History, if you read the news (being aware that you don’t have to believe everything it’s said in the news) or if you see what happens around your neighbourhood, your city, your country…
The alternative would have been to let everyone build its own principles, beliefs and values according to each person’s way of life. Freedom instead of enslavement to a so-called superior entity that tracks all of your moves to judge if you can go to heaven or if you’re condemned to go to hell. We see satanism as the best alternative. We don’t see satanism as a religion, but as a philosophy. Of course there are symbols like Baphomet, Belial, Leviathan and so on but YOU are the architect of YOUR own existence. Satan is in us, and you can use it if you’re strong enough to realize that there’s no god telling you what you can do or can’t do. This manipulation lasted too many years and it’s time to change.

4.The band has been around since 2014 but waited until 2018 to release any music, can you tell us a little bit more about the earlier days?
Naberus joined the band in 2015 and it took a few years to develop some kind of team work, to get better and better, create a concept for the EP and for the shows. Then we wanted to build an awareness and we started playing gigs in 2016 and by the beginning of 2018 we recorded the EP.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Demenzia Mortis'?
It means « the dementia of death ». We wanted a name easy to remember but also gloomy.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?
The artwork was done by Marvin Couget, who also performs guest vocals on Blood Ritual. Then we aded the Baphomet symbol. The result was pretty good but for the album 2 artists are doing an impressive job and we can’t wait to share it on our Facebook Page.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We have played between 30 and 40 shows so far… But if we have to name a few we would say that sharing the stage with bands like Opera IX, Black Flame, Voltumna, Necrodeath, Necronautical, Vehement, Ad Patres gives such a great feeling. We have met a lot of talented bands and awesome people who understood Demenzia Mortis. Each show is a new experience and that’s enriching.
Our stage performance is in constant construction. Each year we have new ideas and we are actually working on new stuff regarding our stage performance so I don’t want to spoil. But as we managed to find a compromise between black and death metal, we are trying to do the same between a traditional performance and some kind of « Demenzia Mortis’ live performance style » if i can name it like that… Nothing too fancy, but something that represents us perfectly.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
By the end of this year we have 2 shows remaining. One with to French bands (Conquerors and Day Of The Beast) on Sept 28th, then we will have the honor to share the stage with Moonsorrow, Azarath, Au Champ des Morts and many more at Mass Deathtruction Festival in Belgium. We already started the booking for new year and are very interested in playing in Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, France and why not many other countries.

9.The new ep was released on 'Malpermesita Records', how did you get in contact with this label?
The EP was first self-produced, but we wanted to get a little bit more visibility on it, with a real distribution. As we already knew Juliette and the roster of Malpermesita Records, which is composed of black and doom metal bands, we've contacted her to ask if she can help. And it was the case so we are now distributed by her label.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?
The reviews we read are all positive ! It’s a huge motivation to go forward making music as we love it and taking the band to another level releasing a full length.

11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
The first full length is scheduled for the beginning of 2020. We are working on new music, new lyrics and the artwork. One of our main purposes is to get on a tour and being booked in different european festivals like Stonehenge or Party San, to name a few.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We are influenced by Marduk, Belphegor, Dark Funeral… Nowadays we are still listening a lot of black metal. It’s hard to name bands… There are so many BM bands around the world and internet allows you to discover them so you can spend the whole day getting into new bands.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks a lot to Occult BM for giving us the chance to express ourselves. Thanks to Juliette of Malpermesita Records, who’s doing such an awesome job for us. Thanks a lot to the readers and every single person who made all of this possible.
