Mortem are a band from Norway that plays a Norwegian style of black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Ravensvart" which will be released in September by Peaceville.
A very dark sound starts off the album which also introduces atmospheric sounding synths onto the recording before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking along with the music being mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the music is also very heavily rooted in the Norwegian style. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the riffs also adding in a great amount of melody.
Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length as well as the solos and leads being done in a very dark yet melodic style when they are utilized and at times the music captures the avant garde atmosphere of Arcturus but mixes it in with a more traditional black metal style and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing and spoken word parts can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in a mixture of English and Norwegian and cover darkness and horror themes.
In my opinion Mortem are a very great sounding Norwegian black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out t his album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ravnsvart" "Demon Shadow" and "The Core". 8 out of 10.
