Imperial Cult are a band from the Netherlands that plays a very raw and improvised form of black metal with some elements of drone, ambient and noise and this is a review of their 2019 album "Spasm Of Light" which was released as a joint effort between Armor Fati Productions and Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Distorted sounding drones start off the album while the whole album is a single track 35 minute song. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the song more of a raw feeling along with the vocals being mostly high pitched black metal screams.
At times the music also gets very dissonant sounding while also having its atmospheric moments. A small amount of melody can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing while the song also adds in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as getting very repetitive and minimalist sounding in some parts of the recording and the music also adds in a small amount of ambient and noise elements.
Imperial Cult plays a style of black metal that is very raw, minimalist, repetitive and improvised sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw along with all of the music being recorded live while the lyrics cover physical violence and material exploitation themes.
In my opinion Imperial Cult are a very great sounding raw, minimalist, repetitive and improvised sounding black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. 8 out of 10.
