Runespell are a band from Australia that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very melodic and epic form of pagan black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Voice Of Opprobrium" which will be released in September by Iron Bonehead Productions.
An acoustic guitar instrumental track opens up the album while also introducing melodic guitar leads onto the recording before going into a heavier direction. Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with some melodic pagan chants also being utilized at times and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
The riffs also add in a decent amount of melody along with some clean guitar also being heard in certain sections of the recording. Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly along with the music also adding in some 90's Eastern European influences at times and they also add in a couple of other acoustic instrumentals as the album progresses.
When the music finally speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the music more of a raw feeling as well as the music focusing more on either a slow or mid tempo style. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Paganism, Destiny, Medieval and Virtue themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Runespell and if you are a fan of melodic and epic pagan black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Firnament In Blood" and "Wings Of Fate". 8 out of 10.
