Cell are a band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that plays a cosmic form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "Ancient Incantations Of Xarbos".
A sci-fi horror and apocalyptic orientated intro starts off the album before going into a heavier musical direction. Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length while all of the instruments have a very powerful sound to them and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the tremolo picking also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the riffs also adding in some melodies at times.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the music also showing some influences of death, doom, thrash metal and hardcore at times and as the album progresses sci-fi elements also make a brief return before returning back to a heavier direction and a couple of tracks also introduces clean playing onto the recording, growls can also be heard briefly towards the end. The production sounds very professional for being a self released album while the lyrics are a concept album that covers science fiction, black magick and necromancy themes.
In my opinion Cell are a very great sounding cosmic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Defiling the Ancient Hierarchy" and "Altering Matter In the Realm Of The Frost King". 8 out of 10.
