Gravatus is a solo project from Romania that plays an ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2019 album "Et Omnis Insipientia Aperuit Os Suum".
Atmospheric soundscapes start off the album before going a heavier musical direction while some of the tracks are very long and epic in length. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. The riffs also add in a decent amount of dark sounding melodies while ambient style synths are also added into some parts of the music along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized and at times the music also gets very atmospheric and dissonant sounding and as the album progresses spoken whispers and words can also be heard briefly on a couple of tracks.
Gravatus plays a style of ambient black metal that focuses more on the aggressive and guitar driven style of the genre. The production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover extinction, morbidity and nothingness themes.
In my opinion Gravatus is a very great sounding ambient black emtal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Vitam Impendere Desperatio" and "Nulla Salas". 8 out of 10.
