Grip are a band from Pennsylvania that plays a mixture of black metal, sludge, experimental and post hardcore and this is a review of their 2019 album "Early Iteration"which was released on cassette by Tomb Free tapes.
Distorted amp noises start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction which also introduces grim black metal screams onto the recording. Elements of sludge and doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the music along with a great portion of the tracks being very long and epic in length,
Influences of post hardcore can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording while all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody.
At times the music also gets very experimental sounding along with some clean playing also being added into certain sections of the recording. When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Elements of harsh noise can also be heard at times as well as one of the tracks being an acoustic instrumental. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the songs also showing an influence of the more modern and atmospheric post black metal style, one track also introduces clean vocals onto the recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover sacrifice, belief and the evolution of an idea.
In my opinion Grip are a very great sounding mixture of black metal, sludge, experimental and post hardcore and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Entrance" "Conception" "Lake(Lady Of The Dancing Water)" and "Judgement". 8 out of 10.
