Botanist are a band from San Francisco that plays a very experimental and avant garde form of black metal that they refer to as 'green metal' and this is a review of their 2019 album "Ecosystem" which will be released in October by Aural Music.
Folk instruments start off the album along with some powerful sound bass guitars. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can be heard while the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams along with the music also getting very avant garde and experimental at times.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while clean vocals are also added into certain sections of the recording. Elements of atmospheric and post black metal are also a very huge part of the recording as well as the music also adding in a decent amount of shoegaze influences and the music also has its melodic and melancholic moments and as the album progresses the vocals also get deeper sounding.
Botanist plays a style of black metal that is very experimental and avant garde while also capturing a great amount of raw aggression without the use of an electric guitar. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album involving the ecosystem of the red forests in the West Coast.
In my opinion Botanist are a very decent sounding experimental and avant garde black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Biomass" "Disturbance" and "Red Crown". 7/5 out of 10.
