Grimtone are a duo from Sweden that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a mixture of old school and depressive black metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Hymner till doden" which will be released on September 27th by Downfall Records.
A synth orientated intro starts off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams which also utilize a depressive tone at times and the music also adds in a decent amount of second wave influences.
The riffs also utilize dark sounding melodies in some parts of the recording along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they stick to more of an old school and melodic direction and as the album progresses some of the music also shows more of a Swedish influence, one track also introduces clean playing and water sounds onto the recording before returning back to a heavier direction.
On this recording Grimtone adds more depressive influences into their old school style of black metal to create something different. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Swedish and cover dark, depressive, murder and death themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Grimtone and if you are a fan of old school and depressive black metal, you should check out tihs album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Dodens Vals" "Morkrets Makter" "Den Oheliges Blod" and "Djavulens Tyram". 8 out of 10.
