Cthonica are a band from Venezuela that plays a raw mixture of war, black, doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2019 album "Typhomanteia: Sacred Triarchy Of Spiritual Putrefaction" which will be released in October as a joint effort between Clavis Secretorvm, Caligari Records and Sentient Ruin Laboratories.
Ritualistic soundscapes starts off the album before going into a very fast and raw war metal direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals also bring in a mixture of bestial death metal growls and black metal screams while most of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
Elements of doom/death metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs along with the music also adding in a great amount of 90's influences. Spoken word parts and chants can also be heard in some parts of the recording as well as all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the riffs also adding some dark sounding melodies into some parts of the recording and as the album progresses elements of dark ambient can also be heard in some parts of the music and one track also introduces melodic guitar leads onto the recording. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover the abyss within every human life with a Nietzshcean and Tehomic-Typhnian approach.
In my opinion Chtonica are a very great sounding mixture of war, black, doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Chalice" "Nor The Deadliest Disease" and "Not As Those Who have Served". 8 out of 10.
