Perchta is a solo project from Austria that plays a very atmospheric and ritualistic form of pagan black metal with some elements of folk music and this is a review of his 2020 album "Ufang" which will be released in April by Prophecy Productions.
A nature orientated sounding intro starts off the album while also introducing folk instruments onto the recording before going into a heavier musical direction. Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams along with the riffs also adding in a great amount of melody.
All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while the music also has its ritualistic moments. Spoken word parts can be heard on some of the tracks along with some death metal growls also being utilized at times and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When whispers are utilized they also enhance the more ritualistic side of the music and when clean singing and chants are utilized they also add in more of a shamanistic atmosphere, when solos and leads are finally added onto the recording they are also done in a melodic style and the album alternates between black metal and ritualistic folk tracks. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in German and cover Paganism themes.
In my opinion Perchta is a very great sounding mixture of atmospheric pagan black metal and ritualistic folk music and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Erdin" "Summa" and "Winta". 8 out of 10.
