Nox Aeternum is a solo project from Pennsylvania that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very raw and melodic mixture of black and death metal and this is a review of his self released 2020 album "The Reaction: A Higher Form Of Killing" which will be released on March 27th.
A very dark sounding intro starts off the album while also introducing classical guitars which also return on later tracks, rain and thunder sounds before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style.
Vocals also bring in a mixture of black metal screams and death metal growls which where not used on the previous album I reviewed while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the Swedish style along with the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them.
.
One of the tracks also introduces clean vocals onto the recording, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly and as the album progresses clean playing is also added on a couple of songs and a couple of tracks are also very long and epic in length. The production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover darkness, death and violence themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Nox Aeternum and if you are a fan of raw and melodic black and death metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Departure Of The Immaterial" "Beg To Sickle To Which She Binds (A Hedgegrow Against The Grain)" "Homage To The Mortuary Effluvium" and "Truth Is Treason In An Empire Of Lies". 8/5 out of 10.
