Oblivion Gate is a solo project from Finland that plays a mixture of depressive black, funeral doom metal and darkwave and this is a review of his 2020 album "Wisdom Of The Grave" which will be released in April by ATMF.
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album along with some melodic yet depressive guitar solos and leads while elements of funeral doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs. Vocals are done mostly in a clean darkwave and goth metal style and most of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing while the music also mixes in some elements of black metal at times. Atmospheric elements can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with the music also having its avant garde moments, all of the music also sticks to a slower direction and clean playing can also be heard briefly on the closing track.
Oblivion Gate plays a musical style that takes depressive black metal without the aggressive vocal approach and mixes it with darkwave, avant garde and funeral doom metal and mixes them together to create a sound of his own. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover occultism, drugs, dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Oblivion Gate is a very great sounding mixture of avant garde, depressive black, funeral doom metal and darkwave and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Morphine Dream" and "Lesser Key Of Solomon". 8 out of 10.
