Nocturnal Prayer are a band from Newfoundland, Canada that plays a very raw and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2020 compilation album "Advance On Weakened Foes" which will be released in April by Inferna Profundus Records and consists of their 2019 and 2020 demos.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the compilation along with a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking. Vocals are mostly tortured yet high pitched black metal screams while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era as well as the riffs also adding in a lot of melody.
Throughout the compilation you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. A couple of tracks also adds in a small amount of synths along with some covers of Black Murder and Moonblood songs as the compilation progresses as well as the second demo on the compilation remaining very true to a raw and old school style but also having a more powerful sound with all of the musical instruments, when guitar leads are finally utilized they are also done in a very melodic style.
Nocturnal Prayer plays a style of black metal that is very raw and old school ion the 90's tradition. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover darkness, death, blasphemy and coldness themes.
In my opinion Nocturnal Prayer are a very great sounding raw and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Glistening Sword Upon Thy Saviour" "Algnment Of Skulls" "Howling The Bastard Night On Snow Covered Castles" and "May You Way Waste To Astral Gods With Star Disintegration". 8 out of 10.
