Grieve are a band from Finland that plays a very old school and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2019 ep which will be re-issued in April of 2020 by Werewolf.
A very fast, raw and melodic sound starts off the ep which also uses a good amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era while the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched sounding black metal screams and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the music also sounding like it could of easily been around and released more than 20 years ago. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style while synths are also added into certain sections of the recording.
Grieve plays a style of black metal that is very atmospheric as well as being more rooted in the mid 90's tradition. The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover dark themes.
In my opinion Grieve are a very great sounding old school and atmospheric black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Spiteful Scourge". 8 out of 10.
