Greece's solo project Sulferon has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a satanic and occult style of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Death And The Philosopher" which was released by Shub Niggurath Productions.
Spoken word samples and synths start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction. When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams.
When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can also be heard while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. The songs also add in a decent amount of 90's influences along with the music also maintaining a very modern day aggression.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very dark yet melodic style along with one track also introducing clean playing onto the recording as well as one of the songs also being very long and epic in length, synths also make a return in certain sections of the recording and as the album progresses a brief use of demonic voices and whispered vocals can also be heard, a later track is also an instrumental and the album c loses with Bathory and Manowar covers. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover Satanism, Occultism, Death, War and Blasphemy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Sulferon and if you are a fan of satanic and occult black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Shrine Of Broken Strings" "Mangled By Moloch" "Ifrit" and "Siberian Battalion Deathmarch". 8 out of 10.
