Silenced Minstrel are a solo project from Malaysia that plays a very raw, melodic and old school form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2020 album "Volume 4".
A very dark and distorted sound starts off the album while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody. Programmed blast beats can also be heard during the faster sections of the songs along with the vocals being done in mostly an angry sounding black metal shouting style.
All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while the guitar solos and leads are done in a very melodic style. When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling along the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
The songs also add in a great amount of 90's influences as well as some of the riffing also adding in a touch of thrash metal and the whole album also sticks to a heavier musical direction, the closing track also adds in a brief use of ritualistic spoken word parts. The production sounds very dark, raw and old school while the lyrics cover Darkness. Satanism and Occultism themes.
In my opinion Silenced Minstrel are a very great sounding raw, melodic and old school black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Black Journal Of Alkrun-Nar" "Mortification Of The Flesh" "Laments From A Forgotten Age" and "Quod Damnum Omnis Spes". 8 out of 10.
