U.S.A's Black Funeral have returned with a new recording which continues the mixture of occult black metal and dark ambient from their previous releases and this is a review of their 2020 album "Scourge Of Lamashtu" which will be released in July by Iron Bonehead Productions.
Ritualistic soundscapes start off the album while dark ambient style keyboards are also utilized at times. Tribal beats can also be heard briefly along with the heavier riffs also adding in some melodies at times and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the music also adds in a great amount of 90's influences. Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with the music also mixing some of the ritualistic and ambient elements into the heavier sections of the songs.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the guitar leads also being done in a very dark and melodic style when they are utilized and as the album progresses shamanistic style percussion and chants can also be heard briefly as well as one song also adding in some avant garde touches. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover kassaputu, demonology and vampyrism of the Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian and the Ur III periods of Mespotamia.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Black Funeral and if you are a fan of occult black metal and dark ambient, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Vampyric Rabisu At The Threshold" "Seven Udug-Hul" and "Pazuzu King Of The Lilu-Demons". 8 /5 out of 10.
