Ancient Gate are a solo project from Argentina that plays an old school and atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "From The Shadow Lands".
Atmospheric sounding keyboards start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them while the music also is very heavily rooted in the 90's era.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while most of the tracks are very long and epic in length. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the guitar riffing also adding in a small amount of melody at times.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style as well as keyboards also making a return in certain sections of the recording and at times the vocals also get very grim sounding, as the album progresses a brief use of spoken word parts can also be heard and the recording closes with a cover of Judas Iscariot's "Before A Circle Of Darkness". The production sounds very raw and old school while the lyrics cover horror, legends and cosmos themes.
In my opinion Ancient Gate a very great sounding old school atmospheric black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Under The Tomb Skies" "From The Shadow Lands" and "Through Paths Forgotten". 8 out of 10.
