Valravn are a solo project from the United States that plays an old school form of pagan form of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 demo "Eclipse Of Heathen Winds" which was released by Morbid Chapel Records.
A very dark, distorted yet atmospheric sound starts off the demo while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's Polish style. Synths can also be heard briefly along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a decent amount of blast beats and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
When tremolo picking is utilized it also gives the music more of a raw feeling while the riffs also add in a decent amount of epic sounding melodies. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the tracks also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, a couple of songs are also long and epic in length as well as a brief use of folk instruments and nature sounds.
Valravn plays a style of pagan black metal that goes back to the 90's era of the Polish bands. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Germanic Paganism and Heathenism themes.
In my opinion Valravn are a very great sounding old school pagan black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Wolf's Destiny" and "Celestial Halls Of Wotan". 8 out of 10.
