Abhorrot/The Demos 2007-2009/Morbid Chapel Records/2020 Compilation Album Review

  Abhorrot  are  a  band  from  Austria that  has  recently  been  featured  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  old  school  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  compilation  album  "The  Demos  2007-2009"  which  was  released  by  Morbid  Chapel  Records  and  consists  of  their  demos  "Death  I  Blasphemy"  "Sanctuary  Of  Darkness"  a  rehearsal  from  2007  and  a  live  show  from  2008.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Death  metal  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  music  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  primitive  and  old  school  style  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  along  with  one  of  the  tracks  being  a  cover  of  Nihilist's  "Supposed  To  Rot".  On  the  second  demo  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  Gregorian  chants  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical direction  which  also  shows  the vocals  getting  more  bestial  and  guttural.

  The  songs  on  the  second  demo  are  also  more  aggressive  and  rawer  than  the  first  one  as  well  as  some  of  the  slower  riffing  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  doom/death  metal.  One  of  the  later  tracks  also  brings  in  more  of  a  ritualistic  atmosphere  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  musical  direction,  the  rehearsal  and  live  tracks  also  capture  more  of  an  old  school  vibe  along  with  some  grim  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Ancient  Darkness  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Abhorrot  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Death  In  Blasphemy"  and  "Ancient  Blakk  Obsvrity".  8  out  of  10.
