Paysage D'Hiver are a solo project that plays an ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 double album "Im Wald" which will be released on June 26th by Kunsthall Produktionen.
Field recordings start off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams along with most of the tracks being very long and epic in length
The songs also capture a very lo-fi atmosphere while some of the synths also bring back some of the mid 90's atmospheric style. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the riffs also adding in some melodies and field recordings also return on the later tracks.
At times the riffs also get very repetitive sounding along with some of the tracks also being instrumentals. Elements of ambient can also be heard at times, spoken word parts can also be heard briefly as well as one track also adding in a brief use of melodic chants and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and as the album progresses a brief use of melodic guitar leads and clean playing can also be heard. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Winter, Astral Projections and Darkness themes.
In my opinion Paysage D'Hiver are a very great sounding ambient black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this double album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Im Winterwald" "Stimmen im Wald" "Kalteschauer" and "So halt es wider". 8 out of 10.
