Cruel Spirit are a solo project from Kentucky that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of his 2021 demo "Arrogance" which was released by Blasfemas Records.
A very dark and demonic sounding intro starts off the demo before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. A lot of the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave era and the vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also remain very true to an old school style while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Most of the riffing is also done on power chords which also enhances the primitive atmosphere of the music along with a couple of tracks also adding in a brief use of synths and one song also introduces clean playing onto the recording.
On this recording Cruel Spirit remains true to the raw style of black metal that he has established on his previous release. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover misanthropy and abaddon themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Cruel Spirit and if you are a fan of raw black metal, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Congregation To Ashes" "Light the Pogrom Torch" and "Cruel Spirit". 8 out of 10.
