This is a review of an album from Antiquus Scriptum a music project from Portugal that has been featured in this zine that was released in 2017 and brought in a mixture of black, viking, pagan and folk metal with some progressive touches and the recording is called "Imaginarium" and was released by Vegvisir Distribution.
A very epic sounding intro starts off the album which also introduces keyboards onto the recording which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Spoken word parts can also be heard on some of the tracks and blast beats can also be heard during the faster parts of the songs.
When tremolo picking is utilized it gives the songs more of a raw feeling while the riffs also utilize a great amount of melody. Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length along with some folk instruments also being added into some parts of the music and clean pagan vocals are also utilized at times.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as some songs also adding in back up shouts. When acoustic guitars are utilized they also expand on the folk music elements that are present on the recording and the solos and leads are done in a very melodic old school metal style, All of the drum beats are programmed and a decent portion of the tracks are instrumentals and interludes along with some battle sounds also being utilized at times.
Some of the riffing also shows an influence of thrash metal and at times the music also gets very progressive and classical music influenced sounding, there are also some Darkthrone, Rotting Christ and Running Wild covers as the album progresses and when black metal screams are utilized they are also done in a very grim style, a brief use of female vocals can also be heard. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are written in a mixture of Portuguese and English and cover bygone times. ancient history, iniquity and existence themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Antiquus Scriptum and if you are a fan of epic black, pagan, viking and folk metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Aljubarrota 1385" "A Sea of Doubts" "The Fifth Illusion" and "Raise Your Fists".8out of 10.
