Merkury are a band from Olympia, Washington that plays an atmospheric from of ambient black metal and this is a review of their 2020 ep "Mori Otis" which will be released in March by pacific Threnodies.
Ambient style keyboards start off the ep and they also mix in with the heavier sections of the music at times along with a touch of noise. One of the tracks is also an instrumental while one song is also over 12 minutes in length which also shows the music going into a heavier direction.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while the faster sections of the music also bring in a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling. the heavier song also adds in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as a small amount of melody.
The music also adds in a good balance between old school and modern influences along with the guitar leads also being done in a very melodic style as well as the music also having its atmospheric moments, the ep also closes with another instrumental. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark and historical themes.
In my opinion Merkury are a very great sounding atmospheric ambient black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Ruins Of The Megalithic Temple Of A Sombre Boreal". 8 out of 10.
