Spain's Balmog have returned with a new recording which takes black and death metal and mixes them together with elements from other genres of music and this is a review of their 2020 ep "Pillars Of Salt" which will be released in March by War Anthem Records.
Clean playing starts off the ep before going into a heavier direction while the only song that is presented on the recording is over 18 minutes in length. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while clean vocals can also be heard at times.
Black metal screams and death metal growls can also be heard at times while the music also brings in a decent amount of dissonant sounding melodies. Whispers can also be heard briefly along with the music also mixing in some elements dark, psycho, goth rock, post punk and traditional mnetal as well as the song also having its progressive moments.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard which also gives the track more of a raw feeling along with the music also mixing in a more modern style of black metal, the song also adds in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as adding in a small amount of synths and spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death, hate, darkness, occultism and satanism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Balmog and if you are a fan of experimental black and death metal, you should check out this ep. 8 out of 10.
