Gaylord is a solo project from the United Kingdom that plays a confrontational form of black metal and this is a review of his 2020 album "Wings Of The Joyful" which will be released in march by Blackened Death Records.
A nature orientated sounding intro starts off the album along with some clean playing a few seconds later. Spoken word samples are also used before going into a heavier musical direction while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of blast beats and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams while death metal growls are also utilized at times. The riffs also add in a decent amount of blast beats along with some elements of grindcore and thrash metal also being utilized at times as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style.
A couple of tracks also adds in a brief use of melodic vocals as well as clean playing also making a return on some of the later tracks, influences of viking metal can also be heard in certain sections of the recording along with one song also being an instrumental, as the album progresses spoken word samples also make a brief return. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark, anti religion and political themes.
In my opinion while I do not agree with the political beliefs of the person behind the project and this blog has no political agenda left or right I still feel Gaylord plays a very decent style of black metal that is also heavily influenced by death metal and grindcore and can see this album appealing to fans of that style if they can overlook the politics. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The First To Die" "Borne From Inferno Winds" "Silencing The Voice of GOd" and "Wings Of The Joyful". 7 out of 10.
