This is a review of another recording from Australia's solo project Chagrin which also shows his earlier style of atmospheric post black metal and the album was originally released in 2019 and called "Cold Emptiness" which will be re-issued in March of 2020 by Nailed Nazarene Industries.
Rain and thunder sounds start off the album along with some clean playing a few seconds later while elements of shoegaze can also be heard at times. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic post metal style and the vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched black metal screams.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while some of the tracks are very long and epic in length. Whispered vocals can also be heard in some parts of the recording along with all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them as well as some songs also adding in spoken word parts, all of the music also sticks to a slower direction and as the album progresses stringed instruments and keyboards can also be heard briefly.
On this recording Chagrin went for more of a slower and less aggressive form of atmospheric post black metal that was presented on later releases. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover dark, depressive and melancholic themes.
In my opinion this was another great sounding album from Chagrin and if you are a fan of atmospheric post black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Our Dreams Where In Vain" "Betrayal And Pain" "Under the Waves I Drowned My Sorrow" and "Leaving This World". 8 out of 10.
