Malokarpatan are a band from Slovakia that has been featured before in this zine and plays black metal with some psychedelic, folk and traditional metal elements and this is a review of their 2020 album "Krupinske ohne" which will be released in March as a joint effort between Invictus Productions and The Ajna Offensive.
Epic sounding synths start off the album along with some touches of classical music before going into a heavier musical direction. The riffs also use a great amount of melody while the riffs also use a lot of melody as well as all of the tracks being very long and epic in length and the synths also add in influences of 70's psychedelic music.
When classical guitars are utilized they bring in elements of folk music while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling and the music also displays its 90's and 80's roots at times.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the solos and leads being done in a very melodic yet old school style. At times the music also gets very progressive sounding, spoken word parts and melodic vocals can also be heard on the closing track. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in Slovakian and is a concept album based upon witchcraft during the 17th century in Krupina and the witch burning's of the Catholic Church.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Malokarpatan and if you are a fan of black metal with some progressive, psychedelic, folk and traditioanl metal touches, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ze semena viselcuov carovny koren" and "Krupinske ohne postyrikate teho". 8/5 out of 10.
