Trollband are a band from Canada that plays a very epic and folk influenced form of pagan black metal and this is a review of their 2011 album "In The Shadow Of A Mountain" which was released by Vegviser Distribution.
Acoustic guitars and folk instruments start off the album along with some synths which all also mix in with the heavier sections of the songs. Clean pagan vocals can also be heard at times while the riffs also use a great amount of melody as well as the black metal screams being done in a very grim style.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic style as well as all of the musical instruments also having a very powerful sound to them.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as the music also having it's symphonic moments but done in more of a 90's style. Some of the riffing also shows an influence of thrash metal along with one track also introducing spoken word parts onto the recording, and they close the album with a hidden track. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Norse Mythology, Heathenism, Nature, Poetry, Death and Contemplation themes.
In my opinion Trollband are a very great sounding epic and folk influenced pagan black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Fire And Ash" "Heathen Blood" and "We Live". 8 out of 10.
