Xothist are a 1 man band from Grand Junction, Colorado that plays a dark ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his self titled 2011 demo which was released by Bleak Environment.
"I" begins with some dark ambient drone sounds and clean guitars and after a few minutes you can hear some more distorted sounds and there are no vocals present with the song being all instrumental.
'II" takes off from the last song while also adding in harsh noises as well as bringing int drum beats, depressive black metal guitar riffs and high pitched screams and after a few minutes you can hear some melodic ambient elements being utilized.
''II" begins with some mid paced drum beats, melodic guitar riffs, harsh noise sounds and high pitched screams before going into a fast and primitive direction but having the noise elements being heavier than the guitars and the guitars keep around the melodic parts as well as switching back and forth between mid paced and fast parts and mixing in small amounts of guitar leads and a few minutes later the song goes into a more dark ambient/drone direction.
"IV" begins with a dark ambient/drone sound and distorted bass and the synths in the song use a variety of many different sounding keys before bringing in the primitive black metal guitar riffs, drum beats and depressive screams which leads to the song going into a more fast and primitive direction as well as utilizing some melodic leads and rhythms at times along with some mid paced sections and the song closes with the ambient/drone sounds.
"V" begins with some drum beats, distorted bass, depressive guitar riffs and high pitched screams along a dark atmosphere and after a few minutes the song brings in drone and noise sounds while keeping the music black metal as well as utilizing some melodic riffing.
"VI" begins with some distorted sounds and a minute melodic guitar riffs make their presence known before going more into a depressive direction along with some heavy bass and drum beats which make the music heavier and setting up the mood for some high pitched screams and then the song starts switching back and forth between mid paced and slow parts and towards the end some melodic guitar riffing makes its presence known before the demo closes with an ambient drone sound.
Song lyrics cover Astral Projections and Negative Energies, while the production has a very dark, raw and primitive sound with some of the songs being long and epic in length.
In my opinion Xothist are a very great sounding dark ambient/black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "II" and "V". RECOMMENDED BUY.
