Kaldvard are a band from Norway that plays a very melodic and old school form of black metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "Domt Til Bal Og Brann" which will be released on November 29th.
A very dark and ritualistic sound starts off the album while chants can also be heard briefly before going into more of a heavier and melodic musical direction. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also add in a great amount of melody and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the music also adds in a lot of 90's second wave influences as well as keeping it modern at the same.
A couple of tracks also introduces acoustic guitars and clean playing onto the recording along with some songs also adding in a small amount of melodic vocals. Spoken word samples can also be heard briefly as well as a couple of the tracks being very long and epic in length.
As the album progresses a brief use of growls and whispers can also be heard along with the closing track also introducing folk instruments onto the recording. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in a mixture of Norwegian and English and cover the trials between witches and sorcerers from 1570 to 1695 in Norway and Denmark.
In my opinion Kaldvard are a very great sounding melodic and old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Innferd" "Domt Til Bal Og Brann" and "Tilbake". 8 out of 10.
