Brethren are a solo project from Australia that plays a very ritualistic form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2019 ep "Effigy".
A very ritualistic sounding intro starts off the ep before going into heavier musical direction while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams an the music also has a good amount of 90's influences as well a s being very modern at the same time.
At times the bass guitars are also used as a lead instrument while some ritualistic elements are also mixed into the heavier sections of the songs. As the ep progresses a brief use of acoustic guitars can also be heard as well as one song being an instrumental and all of the tracks also stick to either a slow or mid tempo direction.
Brethren plays a style of black metal that is very heavy and ritualistic sounding. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover death, war, rituals and terror themes.
In my opinion Brethren are a very great sounding ritualistic black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Ritual Mist" and "Damnation". 8 out of 10.
