Broken Spirit are a solo project from Australia that plays a very raw form of black metal and this is a review of his 2019 demo compilation album which has all of his demo's and songs from splits recorded between 2012 and 2017 and will be released as a single album in December by Goatowarex.
A very dark, heavy and lo-fi sound starts off the compilation along with some grim black metal screams a few seconds later. Demonic voices can also be heard at times. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling.
Throughout the compilation you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the riffs also add in a small amount of dark sounding melodies. At times the riffing also add in an imrov atmosphere along with the other demos present on this compilation sticking mostly to a very raw and lo-fi direction.
The songs also add in a decent amount of 90's and early 2000's era influences along with a couple of the tracks being very long and epic in length as the compilation progresses as well as one track also adding in a small amount of clean playing and a later song also adds in a small amount of melodic sounding which also gives the later demo's more variety than the earlier material, elements of harsh noise are also utilized at times. The production sounds very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover darkness, evil, war, suicide, depression and misanthropic themes.
In my opinion Broken Spirit are a very great sounding raw and lo-fi black metal solo project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "III" "Rotting In Void" "Manifest Of Suicide" and "Cultivation Of Evil". 8 out of 10.
